Pochettino, Leeds’ command tower rise sharply…Will Son Heung-min and the ‘prize match’ take place?
As Pochettino is mentioned as the next head coach of Leeds United in the English Premier League (EPL), attention is being paid to whether Son Heung-min (Tottenham) will face a priest.
Amid rumors of Jesse Marsh’s replacement since the beginning of the year, Carlos Corberan, who leads the West Bromwich Albion (West Brom) of the English Championship (second division), has been initially mentioned as the next coach of Leeds.
Corberan is recognized for his ability to lead West Brom to the top of the championship this season. Currently, West Brom is ranked sixth, the Maginot Line to advance to the promotion playoffs. In addition, coach Corberan knows Leeds well because he has coached Leeds Under 23 (U-23) teams. However, coach Corberan’s weakness is that he has not yet led a big league first-tier team.
Meanwhile, according to local media, Son Heung-min’s old teacher, Pochettino, who has a lot of experience in EPL, is rapidly emerging from the list of candidates for Leeds coach. Pochettino is one of the few leaders expected to show leadership immediately without adaptation in EPL, one of the first big leagues in Europe.
Pochettino, who drew attention by placing Southampton, his first club in EPL, in eighth place in the 2013-2014 season, took charge of Tottenham next season and led it to 2019, with good results such as runner-up in the 2018-2019 UEFA Champions League.
Pochettino, who led Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) full of “superstars” such as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, and put down the baton in July last year, has been taking a break since then. “Coach Pochettino is known to be on the candidate list to replace Marsh,” the British newspaper Daily Star said. “Coach Pochettino is close to ‘legend’ Marcelo Bielsa (who promoted Leeds) and is expected to harmonize with Leeds in every way.”
Liz Live, a local newspaper, said, “Liz supporters strongly want Pochettino as the next coach.” According to Evening Standard, betting company Betfair has released a product that shoots Leeds’ next coach, which puts Pochettino in second place. Corberan is first and Bielsa is third.
If Pochettino takes the helm of Leeds, he will reunite with his “assess” Son Heung-min as a player with the opposing team’s coach. Son Heung-min, who wore Tottenham’s uniform in the summer of 2015 when Pochettino was in office, has been playing for Tottenham since then and has stood tall as a “world class” player, becoming the top scorer in the EPL in the 2021-2022 season.
When Son Heung-min suffered from difficulties in the early stages of his entry into the EPL, Pochettino gave his unwavering support and helped him adapt. At the 2022 Qatar World Cup site, Pochettino was proud of his favorite student, saying, “Son Heung-min is now one of the best strikers in the world and deserves praise.”
The remaining EPL showdown between Tottenham and Leeds is the final league match on May 29.
